Col Rodella is the panoramic “balcony” of the Fassa Dolomites. Its privileged position overlooks the entire Val di Fassa, and allows you to take in all the main mountain groups in the area in one look.

Author’s recommendation

On beautiful sunny days, from the mountain hut’s terrace, you can enjoy the spectacle of numerous colourful paragliders taking off from the grassy face of Col Rodella and searching for thermal currents on its sunny sides.

Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

Destination

Rifugio Col Rodella (2464m)

Turn-by-turn directions

You take the “Via della Cascata” uphill, climbing to the right of a river (a waterfall is clearly visible slightly to the left up above the road). You follow the directions for “Soracrepa - Col Rodella” - trail number 530. The paved road becomes a gravel road and passes by a parking area on the left.

You continue along the road, which quickly climbs and crosses the “Soracrepa” meadows, which already reward you with beautiful views over Canazei and Campitello.

The road narrows to become a mule track, and climbs decisively, continuing along the route marked 530 in the “Col Rodella” direction. The trail enters the woods, entering a picturesque valley dug out by the beautiful river that accompanies you on the way up.

At an elevation of about 2000 m, the path bends to the left and exits the forest. A final section on a meadow dotted with little houses allows you to reach the uphill station of the Col Rodella ski lift.

From here, you continue along the road to the nearby Rifugio Des Alpes, and climb on the left to the pinnacle of Col Rodella, where the mountain hut of the same name is located.

You can return to the starting point along the same route, either using the Col Rodella ski lift to Campitello, and then from there to Canazei on foot or by shuttle bus.

VARIATIONS:

Rifugio Col Rodella is also easy to reach with the “Col Rodella” ski lift facility, which starts from Campitello di Fassa. From the uphill station of the ski lift, you climb briefly along the forest road until you reach the mountain hut.

Or with the walk that starts from Passo Sella - Rifugio Valentini. You follow the forest road which travels past Rif. Salei, from Forcella Rodella and then continues towards Rif. Des Alpes on the Rodella, finally reaching the top of Col Rodella, and the mountain hut. Climbing time: About 1 hour - cumulative elevation gain about 250m - About 2.0 Km

Exactly behind the mountain hut ends the short via ferrata of Col Rodella, which starts a few hundred metres to the west of the Col Rodella ski lift uphill station. This excursion is suitable only for people with the equipment and experience necessary to climb a route graded EEA (which stands for Escursionisti Esperti con Attrezzatura - Expert Hikers with Equipment). Since it is an equipped route that is very panoramic and not particularly difficult, it may be the ideal opportunity to try your first steps in this environment, accompanied by an Alpine mountain guide.
